Objectives

Identifying and explaining surprising outcomes in terms of enhanced global market competitiveness in one locality, having several subsidiaries of multinational corporations

Investigating the role of local actors and their abilities to obtain and exploit regional and national resources in the development of the individual businesses

Explaining the outcomes by exploring the importance of:

  • Actors’ regional, national and professional communities

  • Policy making tools at the local and national level

 

Description of work

The Finnish case studies examine how individual subsidiaries of multinational corporations (MNCs) located in the town of Varkaus and divested from Ahlstrom corporation maintain and strengthen their position in a dialogue with the MNC headquarters and other subsidiaries. The focus of the studies is especially on the way in which the subsidiaries obtain and exploit resources from their regional and national environment.
